Subject:The Job Duties of a Firefighter

I am thrilled to inform you about the courageous and brave position of a firefighter. Every year, fires and other emergencies take thousands of lives. Fire fighters help protect the public against these dangers by quickly responding to various kinds of emergencies. They are frequently the first emergency personnel at the scene of a traffic accident or medical emergency and may be called upon to put out a fire, treat injuries, or perform other vital functions.

To help protect lives and property by combating, extinguishing and preventing fires and apply skills to work as a part of team during emergencies, a fire fighter’s job duties include the following:

  • During work hours, fire fighters must be prepared to respond immediately to a fire or any other emergency that arises.
  • Inspecting and maintaining the appliance and its equipment, assisting in testing of fire hydrants and emergency water supplies.
  • Maintaining the level of physical fitness necessary to carry out all the duties of a fire fighter.
  • Educating and informing the public to help promote fire safety.
  • Preparing for the emergencies

Fighting fires is dangerous and complex, thus it requires organization and teamwork. At the fire scene, they connect hose lines to hydrants; operate a pump to send water to high pressure hoses, and position ladders to enable them for delivering water to the fire. They also rescue victims, provide emergency medical attention as needed, ventilate smoke filled areas and attempt to salvage the contents of the buildings. Sometimes they remain at the site of disaster for days at a time, rescuing trapped survivors and assisting with medical treatment.

Maintaining the appliance- fire engine

Between alarms, fire fighters can clean and maintain equipment, conduct practice drills, and participate in physical fitness activities. It is necessary to ensure the proper working condition of all equipments. Sometimes they are the first ones on the site of incident rescuing the victims, who need immediate medical assistance, thus first aid kit should be well maintained.

Physical fitness is required to actively react on emergencies

In order to rescue the victims, they have to carry them on their shoulders and step on the stairs walking 60 steps per minute. This requires weightlifting practice. Also, dragging the hose is a critical task for it is uncharged. They have to pull it around the obstacles and take it near the fire and then charge it. This requires aerobic capacity, lower body muscular strength, upper back muscular strength, grip strength and anaerobic endurance. Ladders used in the fire engines are 24 feet tall and needs to be directed towards the roof or a window of fired place. Thus it is required that all the fire fighters maintain their physical health.

Public education and fire safety

Lifesaving starts with educating people on how to prevent fires and what to do if they are in a fire. They can visit school and provide a speech on measures to prevent fire or how to act in the situation of fire. It is necessary that they have open house, display fire engine and increase awareness of fire and its causes. Safety tips include installing fire alarm on every level of house, test smoke alarms at least once a month, develop a fire escape plan and waking up children and adults who didn’t heard alarm and are sleeping.

Fire fighters have to act and advice on all matters related to protection of life and property from fire. They have to minimize the risk of death and economic cost. Thus it is necessary for fire fighters to 1) ready for any kind of emergency 2) maintain fire engine 3) be physically fit and healthy and 4) educate public on fire safety.
