Form in Modern Painting - Clive Bell

Total words: 347

This essay was about a peculiar emotion and its different kind.  Emotions provoked by works of visual arts, sculptures, buildings, pots, carvings, textiles and so on. All these objects that provoke emotions are called works of art, and all these emotion are not the same but are emotions. Author discusses that there must be one quality with which all these works of art provoke emotions and that is significant form. I think all these views and ideas seem to identify more closely to Aristotle who was a physician. Aristotle was not sure about the idea that if art was negative but he believed a job of art is to express negative emotions. So Clive's ideas about art provoking emotion are same as Aristotle and both of their concepts relate to each other in different ways. As live said; we have no other means of recognizing a work of art than our feeling for it. And the objects that provoke emotions vary with each individual.

Clive's concept about significant form which includes combination of lines and color is totally natural. At the same time all these concepts of Clive relate to Aristotle. As he said that when creating work of art with the energy at that point leads us to the fact that we can still respond to it later in our lives is how art is created. Moreover, anyone can paint well but what makes the difference is the story behind it "Catharsis". Aristotle believed the value of art is the back story and expressive art tend to context. Basically according to Clive anything can provoke emotion but Aristotle is somewhat close to this idea as he believes in the back story of art. Significant form plays important role in a successful work of art as it is the quality of the image which is going to provoke emotion. And last but not least you can't have emotion when there is no form. According to both Aristotle and Clive the only relation between art and a person is the emotions and feels.
