Scrapbooking is were one takes an album, decorates it to their individual tastes and adds pictures, newspaper clippings, stickers, birthing documents and wedding licenses and any other mementos one wants to keep. There are all kinds of different clubs of scrapbookers all over the place these days and many workshops have scrapbook night two or three times a week. It's become a great pastime for some however scrapbooking has been around for a very long time. I guess it can be true, "what once was old can now be new again."
One of the reason for the scrapbook craze is the multilevel of marketing for this kind of creativity. Such companies like Creative Memories have become a multi-billion dollar industry with many companies off-shooting from one. It is said that this creative craze has even surpassed the popularity of golf. One if four homes has a golfer within, but one in three homes has a scrapbooker in it. There are many reasons for scrapbooking and each person has their own reasons. Some feel it's therapeutic to spend time arranging pictures and memories while others want to leave a record of their lives achievements to their children's children.
All good scrapbook pages tell a story, which is the heart of scrapbooking. These stories capture the past for future generations. Every scrapbook page celebrates life and moments captured that are especially unique to the person or family doing the scrapbooking. In essence, today's scrapbookers preserve yesterday for tomorrow.
The most important scrapbooking supply is the album itself, which can allow for the insertion of pages or permanently bound. Other formats do exist, such as accordian-style fold-out albums and mini albums. Basic materials include background papers, scissors, stickers, rub-on letters, die cut templates, photo corner mounts, rubber stamps and craft punches, among a long list of others. Creative materials are encouraged, so many common craft supplies are utilized in scrapbooking.
Technology has of course made scrapbooking look more professional then ever today. However, most feel there is a kind of charm to a scrapbook that has been done by hand only that gives it that personal touch. Scanners, desktop publishing programs as well as all kinds of printing options today can take away the some of the fun out of scrapbooking but to each is own today and we all need to do what's right for the individual. Of course it's a completely different story if one makes a digital scrapbook, right?
