Opening: Let me see a show of hands: how many of you came here today to get out of class? No no no, honestly. That's why I first joined Academy of Finance. I figured I would get out of class, especially for field trips, and that I would get easy A's in all the classes, because they seemed simple enough.. But, as time progressed, I found that I really liked learning about things like, how to earn a million dollars in personal finance class, or finding out what the major exports of Jamaica are in international business class. It turned out that the knowledge I gained from the Academy of finance has helped me better understand the financial aspects of our culture and how all the stuff we learn in class helps us in our day to day life, as well as to open doors to future opportunities.

Benefits:

I mean I have learned everything from how to

o     Balance a checkbook
o     To how to Choose stocks
Because of the academy I now have a better Understanding of world financial affairs, as well as
o     Debt
o     GNP
o     AND supply and demand

All those things that I learned don't really mean much unless I further my education. The academy can only get you started; you have to push yourself to be adequately able to put that knowledge to good use. The academy of finance does however,

o     Open up opportunities for further development and growth in the business world by offering
     Scholarship opportunities for studies in business and finance
And also by helping students and alumni to meet business professionals
     Enter a network of connections to possible job opportunities and experience in specific fields.

That is exactly what happened to me. While in the academy of finance, I gained a lot of knowledge, but I also met a lot of business professionals. From that stemmed a variety of things, such as:

An internship that eventually turned into a full time job.
More Scholarship opportunities for further education
And many friendships and opportunities

In addition to that, the experience I received as a teller at the MCTFCU in school branch at Gaithersburg High was invaluable. I learned many aspects of how banking worked first hand, and how everything relates together financially.

The academy of finance has truly helped me to get where I am today. I am currently here, at Montgomery College, double majoring in Business Administration, and Computer Science, and minoring in Criminology. I feel that without the guidance from the courses in the Academy of finance, I would just be another college kid struggling with a gen-ed major.

Closing

Three years ago I was sitting in those exact seats that you are sitting in today. I remember listening to the lectures and speeches, just as you are now. I realize, now more than ever, that it was a good thing to get out of classes and come to conferences like this one and learn. The academy of finance classes that I thought were just easy A classes turned out to be much more valuable than any high school letter grade could have been. These classes represent a foundation that will help guide you into becoming future corporate giants or small business owners. All of these classes offer more than knowledge and information, they offer opportunities. How many doors will you open with what you have gained from the Academy of Finance?
