Academic disciplines have become so specialized in recent years that scholars¡¯ ideas reach only a narrow audience, until scholars can reach a wider audience, their ideas will have little use.
As technology develops at an unconceivable speed, and the scientific research has reached a much wide area of the world, today, academic disciplines have become so specialized. As a result, most highly advanced academic researches can¡¯t be easily understood by ordinary people, for each one of us is not able to learn all researches. But can we say that those scholars¡¯ ideas have little use? I think it is too demanding for all the scholars to brainstorm an appropriate way to transmit their ideas to all people.
Admittedly, in recent years, some academic disciplines are becoming more and more specialized. The scholars¡¯ research may have nothing to do with most of people in the society. Thus, the ideas come up with them are rarely reach a wide size of audience. Usually these ideas don¡¯t have close relationship with the daily life, and in the near future, we may find no practical use. For example, the exploration of space, and of the planets. Some people are often irate about such kind of researches. ¡°What a exploration! So many people have no idea where their next meal is!¡± Due to its specialty, it is impossible for most of the people benefits from the space exploration. And it¡¯s quite reasonable for us to doubt the existence of such researches is necessary. Thus the gap between scholars and the public is widening in contemporary society.
However, we can¡¯t evaluate the value of all academic disciplines according their practical use. Specialists in many fields are almost doomed to live in a more or less isolated academic world, which does not necessarily mean that their ideas will have little use. The invention of nuclear bomb is a good example. During the Second World War, in 1942, the war had spread to most part of the world. The Nazi regiem and Japanese empire have explosive taste and ambition, the union among 26 countries, including the US, Britain, Russia, China and etc were busy trying to make up a good idea to cut the Japanese aggressiveness. However, who ever knows there had a secret research was being conducted by US top genius---nuclear bomb. Maybe only American themselves, to be more exact, the few Americans who have opportunity to contact the top secrets of the country. The research location in Mexico is totally isolated from the outside world. Where are their audiences? None! But how can we deny the nuclear bomb¡¯s contribution to the disastrous war? without the bomb the American¡¯s painful hurt from Pearl Harbor would have no repay Without the bomb, Japanese government may kept on stirring their soldiers blood to transport thousands of tons of arms to China; without the bomb the whole world may still in a chaos, no one can predict when the war would stopped. The two nuclear bombs, which were dropped in ,,,,,,and ,,,,,,, rescue hundreds of thousands of people from suffering. The fact demonstrate the isolated research at the special ages, special places have a certain use.
The electronic ages comes, as the information become more flexible for people to access to, the relationship between academic discipline and the public could be closer. The best way to benefit society is letting people know what the scholars are doing, how their ideas are gained through research, and what the ideas would bring to us. Admittedly, sometimes it is difficult to explain the distract ideas to ordinary people, but I believe that as long as the ideas is based on the right discipline, it will attract more and more educated people¡¯s eyesight.
We should see the scholars are ordinary people as us, and their researches maybe hard to understand. But we should provide them a comparatively free atmosphere, and wait to see what they will bring. Maybe it is a surprise that we are always dreaming for.
