Hypnotism

Total words: 842

Hypnotism is practice of hypnosis. Hypnosis is a state like deep sleep in which a person's actions may be controlled by another person i.e. put a person under hypnosis. Person who practices hypnotism is called hypnotist. It is not necessary to have any particular type of personality to be a hypnotist. Any man or woman of average intelligence can learn to hypnotise others, but indefinable elements in one man's personality will enable him to become successful hypnotist, just as one man become a skilful musician than another.

The old idea of an hypnotist as a dominant personality with piercing eyes is quite fallacious. On the contrary an unobtrusive manner and a quiet monotonous voice, is a very definite advantage when carrying out certain methods of hypnotic induction. The main difference between a hypnotist and an average individual is that the hypnotist possess, and has the skill to employ the techniques which are contained in the following lines. Until comparatively recently practitioners of hypnotism, that is doctors and lay practitioners were unwilling to disclose their methods, with the result that the subject is still surrounded by misconception people believed that a hypnotist possesses some special secret. Actually there is no one secret, but there are a number of simple instructions which must be observed. If these are carried out with someone who is willing to co-operate the hypnotic state is quite likely to follow as a natural consequence. The difference is that some people may take much longer time to hypnotise than others.

Therapeutic uses
Hypnotism is now proving to be a very great value in therapeutic work. Seldom a week passes without some fresh reports of successful cures being achieved by the use of hypnotic treatment. It is apparent that to engage in any therapeutic work, at least some knowledge of the elements of psychology and medicine. This is because some of the psychosomatic symptoms of a nervous individual so closely resemble the early symptoms of a more serious illness that ability to recognise suspicious symptoms is necessary. Hypnotic suggestion is used in conjunction with many forms of therapeutic treatment and in many cases, enables a hypnotherapeutic to treat cases successfully when all other methods of treatment have failed. Hypnotism has effected cures of many ailments and also it is the only anaesthetic which has had no fatalities. It must be realised that it must not be used indiscriminately as a pain killer. No treatment should be given without medical guidance or supervision.

Your voice and what to say
The manner in which one speaks is all-important. Whilst making suggestions words should flow smoothly and easily at the same time use a authoritative tone of voice avoid uneasy pauses. It is wiser to memorise the phrases you are going to use so that you may speak easily and fluently when attempting on induction. See that your subject is seated comfortably, his/her tight clothes or tight shoes are not restricting his/her movements. Talk to him/her, give him/her instructions, gain his/her confidence at the same time giving him/her a fair amount of time to settle down. Do not rush things and avoid uneasy pauses.

The personality of the subject has to be considered and also the prestige of the hypnotist. An amateur hypnotist has a wider scope than a therapist. Failure is lightly dismissed and try another method policy is followed by amateur where as for a therapist it is the loss of prestige which will make further induction of the trance more difficult. Similarly personality of the subject is an important factor. For example - A rebellion complex subject will unconsciously resent a strong authoritative approach, or a sleepless subject wont respond readily to suggestions "you are becoming lazy" For these reasons it is necessary that the hypnotist has some wider knowledge and his techniques should be more flexible. Last but not the least is protect yourself against negative suggestion. Be on your guard against unconscious negative suggestion. When reading instructions do not look for complication which do not exist. The majority of people fail to grasp the essentials of hypnotism not because the essentials are difficult to understand but because they are so simple that most people overlook them. Do not give any post-hypnotic suggestion, or carry out any experiments until you have carefully studied the complete course.

Method of hypnotising
People you must not hypnotise
Never, under any circumstance attempt to hypnotise anyone suffering from epilepsy or with any symptoms of being hysterical nor should you attempt to hypnotise a women with hysterical symptoms except in the presence of some reliable witness. The complications of the individual who has been hypnotised can be very vague and hazy, but this does not in any way interfere with what they may imagine. Hysterical patients trance recollections are confused with wish fulfillment can easily cause a most invidious situation for the hypnotist. There are also possibilities of complications arising where hypnotic suggestions of any inhibitions of physical movement or function may provide a hysterical patient with a ready-made mechanism for escaping from reality. These important things should be borne in mind.
