There is a debate if hate speech should be regulated on college campuses or not. After reading few articles with the author being either for or against regulating hate speech, I personally feel that it is becoming a social issue. The question is why hate speech should be regulated on college campuses? The answer is that hate speech obviously leads to hate crimes and keeps humans separated. The First Amendment mainly gives people the right to say anything that comes to their minds whether it is something nice or something offensive. Therefore, I believe that as much as freedom of speech is particularly important on college campuses, there should be some limitation for the students, not to use the hate speech. These are all my own reasons why I think it should be regulated.
Hate speech is the type of speech that the First Amendment protects. I believe that this type of speech should be defended. The reason is that if this type speech is censored on college campuses, then the number of crimes or violence in colleges will certainly be reduced. Hate speech is the ordinary phrase that has come to include the use of speech attacks on race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. It is abusive, insulting, intimidating and harassing. Also it may lead to violence, hatred or discrimination. By defending this type of speech in college campuses and even further will show a drastic change in not only reducing crime scenes but even beyond to make this world a better place to live.
When we talk about hateful crimes or hate speech on college campuses, there are two different kinds of crimes: hate crimes and regular crimes. Hate crimes are committed to a person because of his/her differences. Some examples of differences would be someone's gender or sexual orientation or to look at a larger picture their nationality. Regular crimes are like yelling or threatening others. It also includes spoken face-to-face on campus, writing on the walls, or could be placed in his/her mailboxes.
Hate speech has a special meaning or reason for being regulated on campuses. In one hand, there is no doubt that colleges and universities are a particular area of protection as far as the First Amendment rights of expression are concerned. On the other hand, however, a number of schools have already begun to adopt speech codes to decrease tension among students, faculty and administrators over racial, religious, and sexual orientation. According to me the main reason, why schools should adopt this is because of the vast cultural differences among the students. These days the ethnicity enrollment percentage in most of the colleges has been quiet divided between African Americans, Asians, Pacific Islanders and so on. This shows that the world is becoming smaller and thus in this small world if we still have differences and use hateful speech then, there will be no place for people to go.
In order for us to maintain the right environment for the growing kids and for their bright futures, there should be some kind punishment or summon for kids using hateful speech in the campus and even outside. In colleges, whether it's a simple offense of writing something on walls or something as complex and serious offense of being racist to someone, punishment should be given. All colleges should have this law and thus going further this will help the growing kids when they enter their professional careers, being the main reason that most global companies are very strict and particular about language, privacy and manners.
I believe that hate speech is any action that conveys a critical observation of an opinion, which criticizes a group in a harmful manner. On the whole, it can be concluded that hate speech is often viewed offensive. People say anything they want, however they don't realize if he/she hurt somebody's feelings. Only because of freedom of speech people say things freely in whatever way they want. Therefore, I think hate speech should be taken seriously on college campuses. I recommend that hate speech should be protected by a government or an organization that supports freedom of speech. Over all, hate speech is dangerous and should not be allowed.
