Nirvana has been recognized as one of the greatest bands of all time. They were probably the best known grunge rock band, a punk/metal style of music that was created in the 90's. Although the band's name and the people in it have changed many times over the seven years they were a band, Nirvana as we know it today finally consisted of Kurt Cobain (lead guitarist/vocals), Krist Novoselic (bassist), and Dave Grohl (drums). The band was made in the late 80's- Cobain and Novoselic met in 1985, and the band was officially formed and named in 1987. Nirvana's first album, Bleach, was released in June 1989, and was recorded for just $600. In 1991, the band became famous worldwide, and Kurt Cobain's mental and physical health had started to fall apart. His heroin use started at about this time, and he had always been described as a weak and sickly child, often picked on by bullies in his school. Nevermind was also released in this year (Nirvana's second album) and it knocked Michael Jackson's Dangerous off the charts, taking it's place as the number one album in America. Their huge hit "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was aired constantly on MTV. They had become millionaires and instantly popular almost overnight. The band members later confessed that they had never expected anything like this to ever happen- they had never even dreamed of all the popularity and recognition they had received. In 1992 Kurt Cobain married Courtney Love and Nirvana released Incesticide. Kurt Cobain was hospitalized for heroin abuse and rumors that Nirvana was breaking up started circulating. Kurt Cobain also had his first child, Francis Bean Cobain. In Utero was released in 1993, claiming the top spot on all music charts as was expected. Steve Albini was recruited to help produce the album. Following In Utero's release, the band went on a three-month North American tour. Kurt Cobain found it extremely difficult to cope with the demands of a rock star's life, and he once remarked, "If there was a rock star 101 course, I'd really have liked to take it." In 1994, Nirvana went on a European tour, and Kurt Cobain's highly publicized drug overdose in Rome led to him having to go to a drug rehabilitation center in Los Angeles at the end of March. He escaped from the center on April 1 and went back to Seattle. Just a week later, he was found dead in his home- he had shot himself in the head and had left a suicide note by his body. Dave Grohl and Pat Smear were devastated by Kurt Cobain's sudden and untimely death. With the the help of close friends, Grohl recovered and formed the Foo Fighters with Pat Smear. Unlike the band they had just left, their music was an "invigorating, upbeat departure from the angry, tortured strains of Nirvana." In conclusion, Nirvana will always be known as one of the greatest and most influential bands of all time. They have left their marks in other bands, because many other people were inspired by Nirvana's deep and meaningful lyrics and the stunning music. Nirvana's legacy is still alive today, always in the hearts of their forever loyal fans. Cramer, Christina. "Nirvana." RollingStone. 28 Sept. 2003.
